Creepy Numbers to Call: Which Famous Lines Still Answer

Creepy numbers to call fill TikTok, Reddit and YouTube, and many are not what they seem. Some play a recording. Some switched off long ago. Some now ring a stranger. Whether you call them scary, haunted or cursed, you want the story and three answers: is it real, what happens if I call, and is it safe? The table below shows when each line was last listed as working.

Looking for something specific? Lines that still answer, is a number real or cursed?, a call left you uneasy, or a strange number called you.

Quick answer: Of the scary numbers to call that we track, only two have a press report of them working from the last 12 months: Vault-Tec's Fallout line and the Stranger Things 5 Hawkins Police line. Wrinkles the Clown's contact line has one caller's video from August 2026, but it belongs to a real performer. The table below gives 23 famous lines, each with the month a source last listed it as working or "No recent report", so you can see for yourself.

Which creepy numbers to call still answer?

Two lines have a press report of them working from the past 12 months, and they head the table: the Hawkins Police line and Vault-Tec. Both are studio marketing lines built for fans. You can call either one; normal call charges apply. Many other famous scary numbers to call were campaign or puzzle lines. Each was public at some point. The date shows the newest source we found that listed the line as working; for older lines that is usually a list site, not a call report. An older line may be switched off or may now ring someone else.

If a person answers any of these lines, apologise and hang up. Of these lines, the numbers not to call are Wrinkles' line, which belongs to a real performer, and any line that shows "No recent report", because it may now ring a stranger. The film and game lines have their own hub, movie phone numbers, and Stranger Things has its own page.

Famous legends behind the numbers

These are legends first and phone numbers second. We found no cursed or haunted number from Australia; searches there for scary numbers to call turn up the same famous lines as everywhere else.

  • 20202020: a 1970s British phone-box tale about a voice pleading for help. The 20202020 legend.
  • 666-666-6666: the devil's number. The 666 number.
  • 10000000000: a viral "haunted" number. The ten-billion number.
  • 090-4444-4444: a Japanese number, most likely a test or data line, later tied to the Sadako legend. Sadako's number.
  • 0888 888 888: a real Bulgarian number whose three owners died between 2001 and 2005; the carrier reportedly blocked it, and no link between the number and the deaths has been shown (The Register, 2010). The Bulgarian number.
  • Thailand's 999-9999 wish legend: the title of a 2002 Thai horror film. Do not dial 999 as a dare: it is an emergency number in the UK. The Thai wish number.
  • The Red Numbers: a rumour, first reported in Lagos in 2004, that answering certain numbers could kill. The operator called it a hoax (The Register, 2004), and in 2011 Nigeria's regulator told the public a call cannot kill (NPR). We never print the digits. How the panic spread.
  • Momo: a viral scare reportedly built on a photo of a sculpture. We withhold the numbers passed around, which may belong to real people. The Momo story.

Are scary numbers real, haunted or cursed?

Not as far as we can tell. We found no evidence that calling any of these numbers can curse or physically harm you, and no verified case of it happening; the real risks are charges, scams and reaching a stranger. Some of the lines are real, and every well-known one fits one of seven ordinary types, including the creepy phone numbers to call that people search for:

What the number really isExamples
A line built for callers by a studio, game or author
Vault-Tec, Murray Bauman's promotion line
A test or network tool that can be mistaken for a ghost
The echo line, the Harvard sentences line
A line from a past campaign or game
Kentucky Route Zero, the Carrie and Pennywise lines
A story with no working line on record
20202020, 666-666-6666, the ten-billion number
A real event glued to a curse story
Bulgaria's 0888 888 888, the Red Numbers panic
A recycled number that may now reach a stranger
Old campaign lines
Viral scare or scam machinery
Momo, one-ring Wangiri calls, spoofed caller ID

Studios and game makers build some on purpose, and such lines tend to go quiet when the promotion ends. Retellings add stories and wrong labels, such as the "red room" tag glued onto a puzzle line. Old legends supply the rest. "Horror numbers" lists shared in India often name ordinary people's mobiles, so we never print them; the by-country guide covers those legends.

Some creepy numbers to call began as Reddit stories. The r/nosleep forum, founded in 2010, has one famous rule: everything posted there is treated as true, even when it is not. By November 2021 it had about 15 million followers (Chornobylskyi et al., 2023). Boothworld began there as a story, reported as posted in 2013 (Creepypasta Wiki); on a forum that treats every post as true, a story like that can pass for a real line. Iceberg charts, such as the r/IcebergCharts "creepy phone numbers iceberg", sort numbers by how obscure they are, not by evidence.

Calls can still feel haunted for plain reasons. Told that a number is cursed, people often hear every crackle as a sign. A "never call this number" warning often makes people want to call it. On an echo line your own voice comes back late and can sound like a second speaker. If you called one and feel uneasy, we found no evidence that a call can curse anyone, and an uneasy feeling can follow any scary call. Hang up, do not call back, block the number if it bothers you, and check your bill for unexpected international or premium charges. If you are young, or the call asked for personal details, talk to a parent or carer.

Fiction has rules too: in North America the block 555-0100 to 555-0199 is reserved so films can show a number that rings nobody (555 phone numbers, explained).

Why lists say "still works" when it does not

Phone numbers are rented, not owned. When a campaign ends, the number is switched off or reassigned, so a line that played a horror recording in 2019 can be a business line in 2023 and a private mobile in 2026, while old lists keep describing the 2019 version. Hawkins Power and Light's old Stranger Things promotion line shows how it happens: according to its author, a later check found the line playing a recording about Medicare (The Ghost In My Machine, 2023). Nothing haunted need be involved: a campaign ends and the number moves on.

A stack of identical paper lists being photocopied, one sheet smudged

List articles often copy each other, so one typo in a creepy number to call can travel with them. WatchMojo's list prints a wrong number for Kentucky Route Zero (its own page has the right one), and wrong versions of the 408 puzzle line circulate too. A wrong number is worse than a switched-off one because it can belong to a real person. Two of the three top editorial lists we read in October 2026 also print the Red Numbers digits, which we never do. That is why we check the newest source for each line before it goes in the table.

Numbers we leave out on purpose

Some famous creepy numbers to call never appear in our tables. A 2022 list entry says the Hotline Miami tie-in line appears to belong to someone else now. The Hawkins Power and Light line is the one described above. One list site claims an old golf-tip counting line is now an adult service, which we have not confirmed. The Momo numbers may belong to real people. Printing any of them could send readers to a stranger, so we tell the story without the digits. If another list prints them, they are numbers you shouldn't call. The reasons are on phone numbers you should never call.

How to call scary numbers safely

Both lines we suggest are US numbers, so a phone that places normal voice calls should be able to dial them, and a call night is safer if you follow a few habits. The 3 AM challenge is a video format, not a property of the phone lines: a recording plays the same at 3 AM as at 3 PM. What changes is the room.

  1. Call only the two newest lines. If you want one scary number to call tonight, the Hawkins Police and Vault-Tec lines have the most recent press reports; an older line may be off.
  2. Dial it like any US number. From outside North America, dial your international prefix, then the country code 1, then the number (Wikipedia). From Australia, the prefix is 0011 (Telstra). We have not confirmed that these lines take calls from abroad, and international rates can be high.
  3. Hide your number if you want to. Blocking your own number when you call is legal and is not spoofing (FCC); the caller ID guide shows how.
  4. Put the phone on speaker so everyone hears the same recording, and tell the legends between calls: 666, 20202020 and the "red room" game line work better as stories than as calls.
  5. Never share personal details. If a person answers, you reached a stranger, not a performance, so hang up politely. If you are young and a call upsets you, tell an adult you trust.
  6. Give one friend reveal duty, so nobody goes home believing a marketing line is haunted.

Numbers you should never call at 3 AM

Some numbers are never part of the game, at any hour: emergency numbers (911, 999, 112, 000) and some old campaign lines that now reach real people. If an old list shows a former lifeline number, use 988 instead (GAO). In Australia, a hoax or vexatious call to Triple Zero (000) is a federal crime with up to three years in prison under section 474.18 of the Criminal Code (Sydney Criminal Lawyers); in May 2026, ACT Policing charged a woman after 34 nuisance calls in one night (ACT Policing). A single ring from abroad can be the Wangiri one-ring scam: the FCC advises against calling back an unrecognised number, because a callback can add connection fees and per-minute charges (FCC). The FTC counted 284,659 US fraud reports that started with a phone call in 2024, with a $1,500 median loss (FTC data book 2024). Our never-call list explains each risky number.

Prank night: where a joke becomes harassment

Prank your friends, not strangers. A prank works when everyone laughs at the end, including the person you called, and a stranger, a business or someone's voicemail is not a prop. Reveal the joke quickly, stop when someone says stop, and never call the same number twice to scare someone. Misleading caller ID shown with the intent to defraud or cause harm is illegal under the Truth in Caller ID Act, with penalties of up to $10,000 per violation (FCC). The law on random calls has its own page, is prank calling illegal.

Can you text scary numbers instead?

Rarely. Only a few creepy numbers to call were built to answer a message, and a text, like a call, usually shows your number to whoever receives it. Many scary numbers to text from viral lists have gone quiet or may now belong to someone else.

A phone sending a message bubble that leaves a trail back to the sender, a visual for texting scary numbers

  • Vault-Tec, 213-258-2858: in 2024, during Fallout's first season, a message brought an automated answer saying the next available appointment was 33 weeks away (Gizmodo). We found no report that this answer still comes back since season 2, so it may not.
  • The Black Phone, 303-529-2166: the 2022 film asked fans to text "ESCAPE" for clues and links (SYFY). That line is in the table above; the campaign ran for the film's June 2022 release.

A campaign text-back is usually an autoresponder: software sends a pre-written message. If an answer seems personal or mentions things you did not write, stop, because that fits a real person or a scam. Never text the numbers passed around with the Momo story, old campaign numbers that may now reach a stranger, or unknown numbers that text you first. FCC guidance is not to respond to suspicious texts, since some scam texts try to collect personal information or confirm that a number is active (FCC).

Where to go next

Three different phones (rotary, flip, smartphone) on a path leading into fog

  • One number, one story: Boothworld Industries, Kentucky Route Zero, the echo line and the clown lines.
  • Film, TV and games: movie phone numbers, Stranger Things and the FNAF number.
  • Legends around the world: creepy phone numbers by country covers Bulgaria, Japan, Thailand, Nigeria and more.
  • A strange number called you: the unknown-caller guide has the calm next steps.
  • Want a laugh instead? Try joke lines, odd recordings and talking clocks.

How we check a number

We try to trace each creepy number to call to its earliest source, compare it with what lists repeat, and record the latest month a source listed it as working. We place no test calls, so each date comes from a public report or list. Our latest check of the Hawkins Police number was in Oct 2026. How we check explains each step.

Frequently asked questions

What numbers should I not call?

The phone numbers not to call are emergency numbers such as 911, 999, 112 and 000 when used as a dare or prank, unknown foreign numbers that rang you once, and some old campaign lines that now reach real people. The never-call list gives each one with its reason.

What are some creepy numbers to call at 3:00 am?

The same lines as at any hour. Of the scary numbers to call that we track, only Vault-Tec's line and the Hawkins Police line have a press report from the past year. The hour changes how a call feels, not what the line plays.

What is the most horror number?

No scary number to call has been shown to be horrifying. For story, Boothworld Industries, tied to an r/nosleep tale. For a real-world chill, Bulgaria's 0888 888 888, whose three owners died from 2001 to 2005, though no link between the number and the deaths has been shown.

Can a scary number call you back?

A recording cannot call you back. Scammers can spoof caller ID so a call appears to come from a number you know, including your own, and the FCC advises you not to answer calls from numbers you do not know (FCC).

Can I call these numbers from any phone, including a flip phone?

The two lines we report as working are US numbers, so a flip phone should be able to dial them. We place no test calls, so we cannot vouch for a specific device. From abroad, dial your international prefix and 1 first, and expect international charges.

What should I do if a scary call upsets me?

Hang up and do not call back. An uneasy feeling can follow a scary call; tell someone you trust at home, especially if you are young or the call asked for personal details. Block the number if it bothers you and check your bill for unexpected charges.
